6/21/2023 0 Comments Scarlet hollow reddit![]() ![]() You don't have to take this seriously since it's complete conjecture, but looking at the number of ratings, the top ~150-200 games probably have almost as many as the rest of the games combined.Īnd for what it's worth, I pretty strongly disagree that there is a cyclical devaluation of indie games. The dropoff in sales is EXTREME, as well. If you disagree, I'd love to hear your honest thoughts on whether a game like Celeste would have actually sold half the copies it did at $40 instead of $20, or if Gris would at $34 instead of $17. You can feel free to disagree, but I think it's pretty hard to argue that the vast majority of the most successful indie games are priced pretty low, despite many of them arguably being worth much more. Of the top 100, I found like 4 games that at any point in time were over 20 dollars. There isn't an easy way to see the most bought of all time, but you can check the highest rated, and I think it's a fair assumption that generally many of them will be among the more popular games. In a world where a McDonald's combo can run you $15, equivocating about whether games deserve $25 is silly. While rents have skyrocketed and the price of food has nearly doubled, the price of most games has stayed the same. There are a lot of people who'd rather fail and get minimal revenue than contribute to the cyclical devaluation of indie games.Īlso, I can't help but feel like games have become an immense bargain in the present economy. Pricing low forces everyone around you to price low. ![]() Rant over lolĬitation needed? Regardless, developers are thinking bigger than short term revenues. Just in general it’s pretty depressing seeing so many games on here and gamebundles that are actually extremely good, but have no popularity because they’re priced like 30% higher than what they probably should be. Not that indie games can’t get away with charging more, plenty do, and maybe none of that applies to this game in particular. By seriously undercharging, it caused the game to boom, and probably sell 10-20x (if not more) what it would have at $60. That game could have easily been $60 on release, but barely anyone (compared to its success now) would have bought it. It’ll sell WAY less.Īn easy example of how generous pricing can cause a game to blow up is Hollow Knight. All else being equal, an indie game that costs $25 won’t sell half as many copies a game that costs $12.50. What they don’t understand, or maybe their financial advisors aren’t understanding if they don’t specialize in gaming, is that sales don’t correlate linearly with price. And because of all the effort they put into their project, they (rightfully) think they deserve to charge more. It’s easy to assume that in order to recoup your costs, you need to charge 25% more. I think a lot of indie developers really struggle with the concept of pricing. If you're unsure if your post is allowed, please message the moderators first.
